Daniel Wiffen finished in 18th place in the men’s 10km marathon swim at the Paris Olympics.

The gold medal was claimed by Hungary’s Kristof Rasovszky who came in ahead of German Oliver Klemet, with bronze going to Hungarian David Betlehem.

23-year-old Wiffen, from Magheralin in County Down, was competing in his first-ever open water event which took place in the Seine river in the French capital.

Wiffen has already made history at these games by securing the gold in the 800m freestyle, becoming the first athlete from Northern Ireland to win gold since 1988, and the first to win the top individual prize since Mary Peters in 1972.

Clocking a time of 7:38:19, Wiffen also set a new Olympic record in the event, before securing a bronze medal in the 1500m final.

This morning’s event concludes the first appearance at the summer games for the Team Ireland swimmer, who builds on his impressive collection of titles which includes two World Championship gold medals claimed earlier this year in Doha.
