Alan Shearer shot down Gary Lineker while the Match of the Day duo discussed Marcus Rashford following Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday.

The Red Devils were flat during the match at the Amex Stadium, with goals from Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro giving the hosts all three points.

There were a number of disappointing performances on the day from United.

And Rashford was one player who failed to shine, with the 26-year-old replaced by Alejandro Garnacho for the last half hour of the match.

Shearer and Lineker both discussed the England international on Match of the Day.

Lineker defended Rashford, saying that he was ‘at least trying to make runs’.

But Shearer wasn’t having it and criticised the United star, saying: “Yeah, but he’s not a youngster anymore, Gary.

“He has to understand the position and look across the pitch when you can see all of it. He shouldn’t be offside there.”

Shearer believes Rashford showed a ‘lack of understanding’.

He said: “Amad, I thought, was their best player in forward positions, but there was a lack of understanding about where they were on the pitch, particularly from Marcus Rashford.

“The number of times they were in offside positions…”

Rashford is yet to have a shot on goal in the Premier League so far this season, with his stock continuing to drop.

He is certainly a pale imitation of the player that netted 30 goals across all competitions two years ago.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, admitted that there were positive elements to United’s display – despite their disappointing defeat.

But he also called on his team to be more ‘aggressive’ as they look to improve on last season’s eighth-placed finish.

“In build-up and in possession and in how we defend, I have seen some good parts,” he said.

“Also there were parts in the game, especially from the second half, where we should keep more control.

“There were very good parts in this game so I have seen a lot of positives from the performance.

“But we have to build up, in both boxes we have to be more clinical there, we have to be more aggressive.”

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, meanwhile, was delighted with the victory.

“It’s always difficult to describe emotions because they are massive, they are so positive,” said the 31-year-old.

“That’s why I love to do this job because you can’t buy these emotions and you won’t get these emotions through anything else.”
