A suspect was killed and a police officer injured after an attempted warrant execution by Alberta child exploitation investigators in southeast Edmonton.

There was a heavy police presence at 15 Avenue and 54 Street beginning early Wednesday after officers opened fire on the suspect, who allegedly stabbed a city police officer.

According to an Edmonton police news release, EPS and RCMP members with ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit were executing a search warrant at a home in the area.

While police were inside speaking with the suspect, he stabbed an EPS officer, and officers opened fire. The suspect died at the scene. The wounded officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been tasked with investigating the incident. Police did not immediately identify the dead suspect.
