The victim of a fiery multi-vehicle crash in Oshawa over the weekend was a 41-year-old woman whose car was hit by a Mercedes travelling at a “high rate of speed.”

The collision involving nine vehicles occurred Saturday at 12:15 p.m. on Ritson Rd. near Bloor St.

In a release on Monday, Durham Regional Police said a black Mercedes sedan driven by a 40-year-old Toronto man was travelling southbound on Ritson “at a high rate of speed” when it entered the curb lane and struck a white Nissan being driven by the 41-year-old Oshawa woman.

The impact caused the Nissan driver to lose control and hit a Chevrolet Orlando, which then caught on fire.

The Nissan then struck a Honda and Dodge Caravan, which also caught fire.

Several other vehicles were also hit by the Honda and Orlando.

The Mercedes continued southbound after the initial collision, crossing the northbound lanes and careening onto the property on the northeast corner.

It struck the rear corner of a chip truck causing the awning to fall on a male customer.

The Mercedes then crashed into a light pole.

The Nissan driver died at the scene. Nine other people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say that a previous collision happened after a black Chrysler 300 was struck in the rear left corner by the Mercedes as it was westbound in the turning lane at Bloor.

Investigators want to speak with the driver of that Chrysler.

No charges have been laid yet and the investigation is ongoing.
