Can it really be over two weeks since the Olympic Games started?

There’s been intense competition, joy, heartbreak and sporting feats to marvel at — and none more so than those for Northern Ireland, whether competing for Team GB or Ireland.

In the summer games, athletes from NI had won just three gold medals in all the years of Olympic competition. That total has been bettered in just 16 days in Paris.

Swimmers Daniel Wiffen and Jack McMillan, rower Hannah Scott and gymnast Rhys McClenaghan will forever be Olympic champions and were cheered on to glory by everyone across the island of Ireland.

For those watching at home, they provided the perfect tonic during what have been turbulent days on our streets.

Let’s hope their performances and those of all our athletes who have shown so much dedication to their sport and competed in the French capital against the best in the world, can inspire so many more to aim to reach the same heights of achievement at future Olympic Games. Roll on LA.
