Dozens of people are feared to be dead after a passenger plane crashed into a fireball in Brazil.

Footage shows an aircraft – carrying 62 people – spinning in the air before vertically dropping to the ground.


Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the plane crashed near São Paulo in Brazil.

The ATR-72 plane operated by airline Voepass Linhas Aéreas was travelling from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, to Guarulhos, in São Paulo.

Voepass Linhas Aereas has confirmed that 58 passengers and four crew members were onboard the flight.

According to news outlet G1, the incident happened around 2pm local time.

The local fire service said the plane fell to the ground near the city of Vinhedo.

The airline said: “VOEPASS has activated all means to support those involved.

“There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board.”

Video footage shared on social media shows the plane plunging to the ground in a nosedive before disappearing behind some trees.

Sao Paulo’s state fire brigade said it had sent seven crews to the area.

The ATR-72 crashed between homes in a condominium in the city, despite there being people at the location, there have been no injuries were reported among the residents.

The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, held a minute’s silence at an event he was speaking at.

He posted on social media saying: “Very sad. All my solidarity to the families and friends of the victims.”

The aeroplane is believed to be a large passenger twin turboprop plane.
