Hyundai is issuing a stop-sale and recalling more than 3,600 new Santa Fe SUVs in Canada over concerns that the airbags may not deploy during a collision. The automaker more specifically says that 3,658 examples of 2024-model-year gas Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid SUVs are affected, along with 49,719 in the U.S. The affected models were built between December 2023 and July 2024.

On these affected vehicles, the floor wiring harness may not have been properly secured properly, says Transport Canada, and as a result could become damaged if it contacts the second-row folding seat hinge assembly. If this happens, the airbags in the second row may not deploy in a crash; alternatively, they could deploy when there isn’t a crash. Owners of vehicles with damaged harnesses may see the airbag warning light come on.

The good news is the fix is generally quick and simple: dealers will fold the second-row seats forward and check the cables underneath for damage. If they’re not damaged, the dealer will secure them in place with two zip-ties; if they are, the dealer will replace the wiring harness. For Santa Fe vehicles where the harness isn’t damaged, the inspection and repair could be as fast as a half-hour.

Transport Canada labels this recall 2024-430; and Hyundai’s internal code for it is R0265. You can check Hyundai Canada’s website using your Santa Fe’s VIN to see if it’s covered by the recall.
