Police and the fire service have been called to the scene of a car on fire in Bushmills.

The incident took place at around 11am on Tuesday on Main Street in the town.

There was a widespread response to images of the fire online due to social media reports suggesting the vehicle is associated with the DVLA and was checking tax.

The fire service said one engine from Coleraine was called to the scene.

“Firefighters used one hose reel to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate ignition. The incident was dealt with by 12.14pm and the scene was left with PSNI,” they said.

The circumstances of the car being on fire are as yet unclear.

The DVLA and police have been asked for a response.
