Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen has shared details of some of the free gifts given to athletes taking part in the Paris Games this year.

In a Youtube video uploaded to the channel who shares with brother Nathan, Daniel gave a rundown of what he received for his participation – starting with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the most coveted item to take home from the Games overall.

“The first thing you get is a gold medal, pretty nice,” he said, making reference to his first-place finish for Team Ireland in the 800m freestyle event in recent days.

With his win, Daniel (23) became the first athlete from Northern Ireland to win an Olympic gold medal in 36 years.

He also went on to take home a bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle final on Sunday.

Medals aside, Daniel said all athletes receive some special champion stamps, showing images of his stamps with his image printed on them.

Athletes also receive a phone strap, a bag with a Samsung water bottle, a Powerade bottle with Olympic rings on it and a Coca-Cola water bottle

Showing the camera, he added: “You get a wash bag with deodorant, soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, all the stuff you need really.”

The wash bag is emblazoned with imagery of the Eiffel Tower, making reference to the location of this year’s games.

He also showed a microfibre towel given to athletes and said they are also gifted an Air BnB voucher, which is applied for online.

But the most expensive gift of all is a Samsung phone, a Galaxy Z Flip 6.

For the first time, participants have been allowed use and carry this phone to the podium at the Games.

Samsung’s smartphones are also being used as professional cameras to cover the sporting event. The technology giant is a long-term Olympic partner.

Those watching the Olympics this year may recognise the phone, which is used by medal winners to capture a “victory selfie”.

It’s been reported there’s been a rise in the sale of foldable phones as a result, according to Samsung.

Recently, Daniel said he’s had plenty of attention thanks to his success and compared himself to Team USA gymnast Simone Biles.

“I actually think I’m probably like one of the most famous Olympic champions,” the athlete told the BBC.

“I’ve got a distinct look about me because I think every sport comes up to me in the dining hall and asks for photos.

“I feel like Simone Biles.”
