Belfast City Council has said it will provide financial assistance to businesses damaged by anti-immigration protesters over the weekend.

Disorder erupted in parts of Belfast on Saturday night following the protests.

Protesters damaged a number of ethnically owned businesses across south Belfast.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for some of the businesses attacked and has already raised over £90,000.

Sinn Fein’s Ciaran Beattie welcomed support being provided to damaged businesses.

“I am delighted that Belfast City Council has agreed to Sinn Féin’s proposal to provide financial support to businesses affected by racist violence in Belfast.

“There is no place in this society for racism or attacks on our minority communities.

“All political and community leaders must stand together as one against this despicable behaviour.

“I’ll continue working to support ethnic minorities and to ensure these businesses get back on their feet as quickly as possible.”
