A Kamala Harris supporter has hailed the Democrat’s “success” in managing the US borders despite some 7 million migrants being arrested illegally crossing the US-Mexico border under Biden.

Senator Chris Murphy said Harris should “run on her record of successfully” reducing flows across the border.

The Vice President was tasked to deal with the root causes of migration from Central America as illegal border crossings were rising in 2021.

As the region is formed of some corruption within government, the drivers of migration are deeply rooted in economic inequality and social factors.

Harris’ role did not include controlling the actual border.

It comes after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump intensified his attacks on Harris as a failed “border czar”.

Joe Biden asked Harris to lead diplomatic efforts to reduce poverty, violence and corruption in Central America’s Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, as well as engage with Mexico on the issue of migration.

Murphy hit back at Republican criticism of Harris.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

“Kamala Harris was given a very important but discreet task.

“She was asked to try and work with our Central American countries to reduce those reasons why people leave those countries because of violence or political instability or economic destitution to come into the United States.

“She did exactly that. In fact, she organised over 50 American companies to invest $5billion in three key Central American countries.

“And guess what happened over the first two years of the Biden administration, migration from those countries was cut by 50 to 60 per cent.

“So Kamala Harris should run on her record of successfully reducing flows to the United States from those three countries.”

The Biden administration is facing calls to release the figures for how many illegal immigrants are living in the US.

According to studies dating back to 2018, it has been claimed that as many as 22 million people are living in the US without legal status.

However, new data suggests the number of illegal crossings by migrants at the US southern border has dropped for the fifth consecutive month.

Around 56,000 migrants were apprehended along the border in July – the lowest recorded since September 2020, according to CBS News.
