Self-tanning is a great way to fake a sun-kissed glow, especially if you’re planning to show a little skin this summer season.

If you follow a few simple steps, you can achieve a great faux tan that’s safe and super easy at home. I’m testing out the St. Tropez Classic Mini Kit ($27) and wanted to share a few tips on how to apply self-tanner like a pro.

Nadia Albano offers tips for applying sunless tanning at home.

Step 1: Exfoliate

To prepare my skin for self-tanner, I always start by exfoliating the day before application. I like the smell and results of Herbivore Exfoliating Body Scrub. It’s super moisturizing and contains coconut oil as well as Moroccan Rose, which leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft.

Step 2: Moisturize

To prevent the self-tanner from looking patchy, you’ll want to apply a light layer of moisturizer. I use Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion because it’s economical and it also keeps my skin hydrated without feeling greasy. It’s parabens and fragrance-free.

Note: avoid oil-based moisturizers as it can cause the tan to break down and look blotchy.

Step 3: Apply with a mitt

Using a mitt is a game changer as it achieves a more even-looking glow. Start with the legs and work your way upward. Pump or dispense the self tanner directly onto the mitt. Sweep it over the skin using circular motions for an even and streak-free result.

Note: if your using a tanning mist, spritz the it onto the body first, then blend with a tanning mitt

A few other self-tanner products to try:

Jergens All Natural Glow Instant Sun Mousse ($11.99) is a great drugstore alternative. Colour develops instantly and continues to develop over several hours

Isle of Paradise Express Self-Tanning Mousse ($43.50) is a lightweight self-tanning express mousse that develop within 30 minutes and will continue to develop over 4-6 hours. It’s streak-free and stain-free.

Salty Face Tanning Foam ($69) is a sustainable, vegan and sulphate-free option and offers a natural, buildable result.
