Ontario is not the province with the most burglaries, as many would assume.

According to a new study, residents of Lethbridge, Alta., have to be most on guard of their properties.

In fact, Alberta owned three spots in the top 10 of most burgled Canadian cities per capita, making it the least safe province to live in when it comes to break-ins.

Barrie and Sherbrooke, Que., were found to be the safest cities for homeowners, the folks at cleaning company Home Spritz found, citing data from Statistics Canada.

The number of break-ins across the country fell in 2023 to 130,076 incidents, a 1.8% drop from the year before.

There were a reported 848 burglaries per 100,000 people in Lethbridge.

In second was Saskatoon, with a rate of 702 recorded incidents per 100,000 residents.

Winnipeg ranked third on the list of most burgled cities in Canada with a reported 692, while another Saskatchewan city, Regina, followed with 654 break-ins per 100,000 people.

Moncton, N.B., rounded out the top five with 586 incidents per 100,000 residents.

Edmonton (495), Kelowna, B.C. (489), Calgary (413), Abbotsford-Mission, B.C. (383), and St. John’s (378) made up the rest of the top 10.

Many Ontario cities were in the top 20, taking up spots 11 through 16.

Kingston was the most burgled Ontario city in 11th place with 369 burglaries per 100,000 residents, followed by Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo (349), Windsor (344), Greater Sudbury (320), Brantford (318) and Thunder Bay (309).

Vancouver was in 17th place with 301 break-ins for every 100,000 residents, Victoria followed at No. 18 with 290 reported burglaries, while the entire province of P.E.I. was 19th with 281 incidents reported.

Other Ontario cities in the top 30 included Hamilton, Belleville, London, Guelph and St. Catharines-Niagara Region.

Toronto was No. 34 with 200 reported burglaries per 100,000 residents, while Barrie was the safest with 150 incidents.
