PARIS — Synchronized divers Caeli McKay and Kate Miller have finished just off the podium in Olympic synchronized 10m platform diving, marking the second Games in a row Canada has finished fourth in this event.

This is McKay’s second Olympics; the 24-year-old from Calgary competed in women’s 10m synchronized platform diving at the 2020 Tokyo Games, where she and partner Meaghan Benfeito missed the podium by less than one point (Benfeito retired from competitive diving in 2022 after competing in four consecutive Olympics).

Nineteen-year-old Miller, who hails from Ottawa, is making her Olympic debut.

China won gold — its third in as many diving events at these Games — while the People’s Republic of Korea was silver and Great Britain claimed bronze.

McKay and Miller had been sitting in third before the fifth and final dive, but were knocked out of the podium spot after a strong dive by the Great Britain team.

China topped the podium in every diving event except the men’s synchronized 10m platform dive at the 2020 Tokyo Games and its team of Yuxi Chen and Hongchan Quan was the favourite to win. The American duo of Jessica Parrato and Delaney Schnell, who took silver in this event at Tokyo, were also favourites to hit the podium, but finished sixth.

Earlier this week, the Canadian team of Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray took bronze in men’s 10m synchronized platform dive.
