Clandeboye’s Rebekah Gardner led the way for the Ulster contingent in the first round of stroke play qualifying at the Irish Women and Girls’ Close Championship at Roscommon.

Gardner fired four birdies and two bogeys in a two-under 71 to hold a share of fourth after day one, with the top-12 qualifying for the match play section which begins on Thursday.

Royal Portrush pair Hannah Lee-McNamara and Laura Webb are also well placed in a share of eighth and 10th respectively after rounds of level-par and one-over, with Moyola Park’s Kayleigh Mulholland also at one-over.

Royal Portrush’s Gemma McMeekin, Knock’s Annie Armstrong and Clandeboye’s Molly O’Hara are one shot off the cut line after rounds of 74 on a day where Tramore’s Anna Dawson all but cemented her match play place after an eight-under 65.

Meanwhile, Lee-McNamara is one of five Ulster players named in the Ireland squad for next week’s Home Internationals, which will be played at Conwy in Wales.

She will be joined by Belvoir Park’s Holly Hamilton, Malone’s Fionn Dobbin, Royal Belfast’s Finlay Eager and Warrenpoint’s Harry McArdle from August 6-8.
