The Calgary Flames completed an important piece of paperwork Tuesday, signing rising star goaltender Dustin Wolf to a two-year contract extension.
It starts as a two-way ticket for next winter and upgrades to a one-way deal for the 2025-26 campaign. Wolf will earn a cap hit of US$850,000 at the top level.
If the 23-year-old wins the starting job at training camp, and he’ll certainly have a crack at it, this will be viewed as a major bargain.
Wolf, a seventh-round steal in the 2019 NHL Draft and a two-time winner of the AHL’s goalie-of-the-year award, posted a 7-7-1 record in 17 big-league appearances this past season. He capped the campaign with four consecutive wins.
With Jacob Markstrom traded away, Wolf will compete with Dan Vladar and free-agent addition Devin Cooley for the top job. While Wolf remains waiver-exempt, most believe he is ready to be a full-timer with the Flames.
