A new TV show starring Derry Girls actress Louisa Harland will not be renewed for a second season on Disney+.

Renegade Nell follows a quick-witted outlaw in 18th century England and launched earlier this year.

However, it failed to meet the streaming giant’s threshold for a renewal which is based on a number of metrics.

The cast and crew – including Harland who played Orla McCool in Derry Girls – have been informed.

The series was first announced three years ago was one of the most anticipated projects to be commissioned out of Disney+’s UK office.

A Disney spokesman told Deadline: “Disney+ Original series, Renegade Nell, will not be returning for a second season on the service. We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor.

“We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast – led by Louisa Harland – and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.”

Other cast members include Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed and Joely Richardson.

Harland attracted particular praise for her first lead performance playing a superpowered 18th-century highwaywoman.

The Dublin-born actress previously said: “Nell is different to Sally’s other characters. There are magical elements, but it’s still quintessentially Sally. She writes real people so well — flawed, funny and raw characters you can relate to.

“She didn’t really have to pitch it to me. Sally Wainwright and Disney combined… it’s everything we never knew we needed.

“I love this world, with its magic, fantasy and epic fight sequences. I also love the idea that the whole family can watch it.

“Sally is so great at writing truthful characters and relationships, and she’s great at writing for women.”

Happy Valley writer Wainwright is currently busy working on BBC drama Riot Women which is based on a punk band formed by five women going through menopause.

Harland is best known for her role as the hapless Orla in Lisa McGee’s Derry Girls.

Last year she stared in the play titled Ulster American alongside Oscar-nominee Woody Harrelson and The Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis.

She portrayed Northern Irish playwright Ruth Davenport on stage opposite Serkis as English director Leigh Carver, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star Harrelson playing Oscar-winning actor Jay Conway.
