Team GB now have four medals at the Paris Olympics after a mixed bag of results on Day Two of the 2024 Games.

Evie Richards had a chance of adding two Team GB’s medals early in the day in the women’s mountain bike.

The 2021 world champion only got back on her bike in early June this year after suffering a scary crash that left her unconscious in April’s World Cup.

And she ended up finishing 25 seconds shy of a podium place while compatriot Ella Maclean-Howell ended up 23rd on her Olympic debut.

There was heartbreak for Chelsie Giles in the -52kg judo category, who was defending her Olympic bronze from Tokyo.

She suffered a surprise loss in the second round while boxing hopeful Rosie Eccles was on the wrong end of a controversial result in the women’s 66kg boxing category.

Eccles lost a split-decision to Poland’s Aneta Rygielska and the British boxer was left in tears after the result.

“A boxer knows when they have won a fight,” Eccles said.

“I knew I had won the fight so I am really, really shocked. It feels as if I am in a dream right now, but not a great one. For her to have a point taken off for spoiling, I am even more gutted.”

But Team GB got their first medal of the day in dramatic circumstances in the women’s kayak singles.

Kimberley Woods put in a stellar run to put her provisionally second with only a few runners left in the field.

Poland’s Klaudia Zwolinska then pushed her into the bronze-medal position with Germany’s reigning champion Ricarda Funk running last.

But a major mistake from the Tokyo gold medalist saw her receive a 50-second penalty for missing the third-to-last gate and that handed Woods the bronze.

“I can’t believe how long my journey’s been. I’ve been paddling for 20 years now and finally have a medal around my neck,” she said.

“I’m hoping to be going for another 10 but we’ll see how my body handles up.”

Adam Peaty was Team GB’s great hope in the pool later that evening, but Max Litchfield was up first in a hotly-anticipated 400m medley final.

The 29-year-old finished fourth in Rio and Tokyo and was aiming to break his duck in Paris.

But the British swimmer suffered heartbreak yet again as he agonisingly missed out on a medal for the third consecutive Games.

Peaty was up shortly afterwards as he looked to become a three-time Olympic champion.

He looked in a strong position to do just that after the turn, but Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi stole gold by just two-hundredths-of-a-second.

Peaty ended up sharing silver with American Nic Fink with both finishing with the exact same time.

There will be plenty more chances for Team GB to medal on Monday with the likes of Tom Daley, Duncan Scott and Adam Burgess all bidding to add to Britain’s haul.

Team GB will also be gunning for glory in equestrian and gymnastics as they look to climb up the medal table.
