The Edmonton Oilers have hired Stan Bowman as the team’s general manager and vice president of hockey operations.
Bowman, 51, becomes the Oilers 11th general manager in franchise history, after spending two decades (2000-2021) with the Blackhawks, including 12 years as GM (2009-21).
“I am excited and pleased to be welcoming Stan to the Edmonton Oilers,” said Jeff Jackson, Oilers CEO of hockey operations in a Wednesday morning news release.
“I believe his vast experience and proven success in this role, together with the important work he has done in his time away from the game, fits our goal of being best in class when it comes to all facets of our organization. Through our many conversations, we share a common vision of where we are as a team and what is required to achieve another Stanley Cup title.”
On July 1, the NHL lifted its ban on Bowman, along with longtime coach Joel Quenneville and executive Al MacIsaac, clearing the way for their return to the league more than two years after they were punished in the fallout from the Chicago Blackhawks sexual assault scandal.
Bowman, the son of Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman, won three Stanley Cups with Chicago in 2010, 2013 and 2015 and his teams went 493-310-109 during his time as GM.
Jackson and Bowman will be available to media today at 10:30 a.m. in the Hall of Fame room at Rogers Place.
