University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) have created a video animation series to help families navigate illnesses and injuries. The videos, designed to be also suitable for children, will help families recognise when a visit to the Children’s Emergency Department is most appropriate.
Four videos each introduce a different animal character who is experiencing a common ailment. For example, Bella the badger experiences breathing difficulties and Robin the robin develops a fever after catching an infection.
The fifth and final video explains what families should expect when they visit Bristol Royal Hospital for Children’s Emergency Department. The videos were funded by Bristol and Weston Hospitals Charity and have been expertly created in-house by the University Hospital Bristol and Weston’s illustration department.

Michael Malley, an Emergency Department Consultant at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It can be such a worrying time for families when their child is unwell and they’re trying to figure out how they can best support them at home and when to go to the GP, pharmacy or Emergency Department. We hope that this can make a real difference supporting families to make the best decisions for them regarding when to access healthcare in Bristol.”
