Cool FM, Q Radio and similar stations may fill the need for mainstream listeners, but there can always be a niche market for those that do things a little bit differently.

This is one of the main reasons why pirate radio stations began springing up decades ago — daring to be different.

One of them here in Northern Ireland was Energy 106, which hasn’t broadcast for almost 20 years now, concentrating online instead.

But now it’s ready to return on the straight and narrow, and armed with a broadcasting licence, the dance music station will begin airing on the radio later this year.

We do have a limited range of local music stations to listen to, so added variety is always welcome.

Whether Energy 106 still has the same appeal given its new-found legal status will be down to the music it provides.

However, the station says there will be a minimal advertising experience.

Little then to spoil the dance music fun… if you have the energy to keep up.
