Belfast actor Ciaran Hinds could be in line to [;au famous wizard Gandalf in season two of Amazon Prime’s blockbuster series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

While it was previously reported that he will be in the upcoming series, Total Film magazine has now confirmed the 71-year-old will be playing the part of a mysterious wizard and hinted that he may even be starring as one of the most famous from book and screen – Gandalf.

However, it’s not yet been confirmed whether the actor will play the iconic role in JRR Tolkein’s world of orcs, wizards and elves.

Showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay said “Game of Thrones actor Ciarán Hinds making the leap from Westeros to Middle-earth as a wizard hunting down Daniel Weyman’s mysterious figure (who may or may not be Gandalf). His arrival marks a Middle-earth first, as he traverses the landscape of Rhûn, which means we’ll witness deserts for the first time in Tolkien’s world.”

Season two of Rings of Power will debut on Prime Video on August 29, 2024, much to the delight of fans who have been desperate to find out what legendary villain Sauron has planned after creating the land of Mordor.

The official trailer finally dropped in May and revealed that shapeshifter Sauron has returned as an elf as he attempts to bind Middle Earth through his Rings of Power.

Fans also got a glimpse of his dark fortress for the first time since the creation of Mordor at the end of season one, as Galadriel and her allies prepare to face down Sauron’s evil.

“Sauron has returned,” said Amazon Prime, as the company recently released the official trailer.

“Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.

“Building on season one’s epic scope and ambition, season two of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity.

“Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.”

Rings of Power prequels the epic Lord of the Rings film trilogy and season one was viewed by more than 100 million people worldwide.

The second season is produced by showrunners and executive producers JD Payne and Patrick McKay.

They are joined by executive producers Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, and Gennifer Hutchison, along with co-executive producer and director Charlotte Brändström, producers Kate Hazell and Helen Shang, and co-producers Clare Buxton, Andrew Lee, Glenise Mullins, and Matthew Penry-Davey.

Additional season two directors include Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper.
