Sir Keir Starmer is set to hold talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez over Gibraltar.

The PM has reportedly discussed post-Brexit Gibraltar agreements at the European Political Community summit with his Spanish counterpart.

Spanish news agency EFE reports the pair have not yet set a date on the meeting.

It comes as the Rock has been in the news recently after Euro winning members of the Men’s Football Team were filmed singing a song claiming the exclave is Spainish.

The team was greeted by a huge crowd of fans at a celebration event in Madrid after winning the Euros against England on Sunday.

At the event, AC Milan player Alvaro Morata took the opportunity to lead the crowd in a chant about British overseas territory Gibraltar.

The status of Gibraltar and how to police the border with Spain have been points of contention since Britain voted in 2016 to leave the European Union.

Spain ceded the outpost, famed for its towering rock, to Britain in 1713 but has long called for its return.

Waving flags and dressed in Spain’s red and yellow colours, tens of thousands of people greeted the champions after an open-top bus parade through Madrid.

Spain defeated England 2-1 on Sunday with substitute Mikel Oyarzabal grabbing an 86th minute winner after Nico Williams had opened the scoring just after half-time.

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo told Times Radio: “Nothing is going to change as a result of a football match, or something a footballer in his 20s says – whether holding the European Cup or not.

“But it goes to the root of things that we find offensive. We’re a separate Uefa nation.”
