For many years, the prospect of a German manager taking charge of England has always looked impossible. That’s all changed, however, with at least two bosses from the country keen on replacing Gareth Southgate following his bombshell resignation earlier this week.

The 53-year-old walked away from the role less than 48 hours after his side’s Euro 2024 dreams had been dashed with a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final.

As things stand, Eddie Howe is the frontrunner for the post. Prising him away from Newcastle won’t be easy, however, with the Toon already making it clear they won’t let the 46-year-old go without a fight.

Graham Potter is another candidate. He remains on the market following his sacking at Chelsea last April and has confessed he’s eager to get back in the dugout.

But England could go down the foreign route.

They have done so in the past, with Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello both given the keys to Wembley. Since the Italian’s exit in 2012, however, the Three Lions have reverted to type by going for their own.

There are some interesting murmerings coming out at present. Two German managers, who are both serial winners, are interested in taking charge.

The first is Thomas Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich by mutual consent earlier this summer after a turbulent 18-month period in charge of the Bundesliga side.

Tuchel is one of the best managers in world football, despite things at the Allianz Arena failing to work out.

He turned Borussia Dortmund into a force, guided PSG to their only Champions League final (with two Ligue 1 titles along the way) and won the famous competition with Chelsea.

Tuchel is combative and abrasive at times but his record speaks for itself. With the 50-year-old keen, the FA could decide to go for a man who has already shown he can mastermind wins on the biggest stages.

The second German manager keen to take charge of England is reportedly Joachim Low.

Low hasn’t taken a job since leaving his position as Germany manager in June 2021.

He managed 198 matches during his 15-year stint in charge, with Germany winning the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Argentina back in 2014.

His reign did go a little stale towards the end as Germany struggled to transition from the old to the new.

But with a win percentage of 62 per cent from his time in the dugout, England would perhaps be wise to sit down and discuss a potential appointment.

One German boss who doesn’t want the job, however, is Jurgen Klopp.

The former Liverpool boss has been linked and is admired by the FA due to his work at Anfield, Borussia Dortmund and Mainz in the past.

But Klopp is adamant he needs some time off, having grown fatigued towards the end of his time at Anfield.

Who England go for remains to be seen. However, the prospect of a German manager taking charge has never seemed more possible.
