A gunman allegedly pointed a weapon at a family during an argument on a trail in Pickering.

A man made a derogatory remark towards a woman on Duffins Trail on July 16 as she was passing by with her husband and two children on bicycles, said Durham Regional Police.

When the husband came to help his wife, the man pulled a gun and pointed it at the family members, according to officers, who responded to the area around 7 p.m.

When the victims quickly fled on their bikes, the armed man followed in his vehicle. The husband got off his bike to protect the children when the gunman got out of his vehicle, according to the allegations.

The assailant grabbed and damaged the victim’s bicycle before stealing it and fleeing the area in his car, said police.

Officers located a suspect a short distance away and arrested him without incident. No one was hurt.

Dwayne Robert Richards, 37, of Ajax, faces charges, including pointing a firearm, theft under $5000, and failing to comply with undertaking.

Police urged anyone with information to call 1-888-579-1520, ext. 2565.
