Showering involves a lot of personal preferences. From choices like the type of shampoo you use to how frequently you wash – everyone has their own firm beliefs about the correct approach.
The timing of a shower is often hotly debated; morning enthusiasts argue it kick-starts their day, whereas evening advocates extol the virtues of going to bed clean. But now, a cosmetic doctor has finally settled the age-old debate by declaring one option superior to the other.
Doctor Nicole James stated that taking a shower at night is often better than doing so in the morning. She claimed it has “serious benefits” for those with sensitive skin or allergies, and can even help you sleep better.
In a recent TikTok video, Dr Nicole acknowledges that “morning showers are great” but notes that some unique advantages can only be realised when you shower before bedtime. Not only can nighttime showers enhance sleep quality, but they also protect sensitive skin by removing allergens and grime accumulated during the day.
Dr Nicole explained: “Heat from the shower can improve your sleep quality. The rise in your body temperature, followed by the gradual cooling, can signal the body that it’s time to rest.
“Plus, showering at night means you will wash off a lot of allergens that have accumulated on you throughout the day. So, if you’re someone who is particularly prone to getting allergies, this could be a crucial step for you. When you don’t shower at night, you promote dust mites in your bed. These can also be quite triggering if you have a lot of allergies.”
In her video caption, Dr Nicole emphasised that the choice of when to shower is “all about personal preference”, and there’s no issue with morning showers. However, she suggested: “If you’re struggling with skin issues or sleep, try switching up your routine!”
The video sparked a debate among viewers. While many concurred with Dr Nicole and vouched for nighttime showers, others maintained they would “feel gross” without their morning rinse.
One viewer shared: “I recently started night showers, and they are the best. I’m getting used to the everyday routine, but so far, so good!” Another added: “I can’t go to bed without showering at night. It relaxes me and makes me feel clean and soft. And a quick rinse in the morning makes me feel fresh and sure that I don’t smell.”
However, another commenter countered: “We all sweat at night. I’d feel so dirty going out without my fresh morning shower.”
