A man arrested on suspicion of the murder of a Bristol woman more than 30 years ago has been ruled out of the probe, it has emerged.

The person responsible for the death of Carol Clark has remained a mystery since the 32-year-old’s body was found dumped at the side of a canal in 1993. She had been strangled and her neck was broken.

In March last year officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary travelled up to Newcastle to arrest a man as part of the investigation into Carols’ death, according to ChronicleLive.

The 64-year-old was questioned before being released on bail. But the Chronicle reports that he will face no further action.

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said: “I can confirm that the man from Newcastle who was arrested in connection with the murder of Carol Clark will face no further action.

“The investigation into Carol Clark’s death is still ongoing.”

Police say Carol was last seen getting into a car in in the Montpelier area of Bristol at around 11.30pm on March 26, 1993. Two days later, a dog walker found her body close to the water at Sharpness Docks and a large-scale murder investigation was launched.

The case was reopened in 2023, when police received “new and significant” information.

At the time Carol’s family released a statement.

They said: “We are aware that the investigation into Carol’s death is being re-opened based on new evidence and that new enquiries are being pursued.

“We hope that this investigation will allow us some closure. We are being updated by police family liaison officers, and ask for our privacy to be respected at this time.”
