Garages at a council tower block could soon be removed as part of a renovation project under new plans recently submitted. Each week Bristol City Council receives dozens of planning applications seeking permission for a whole range of developments.

Over the past seven days, those applications also included converting two old pubs into shops. Here’s this week’s round-up of notable planning applications submitted to the council.

Every week dozens are validated by the local authority and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications — whether in support or objection.

The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees. No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Bristol City Council’s website.

Historic pub converted into shop

A historic pub in Easton could also be converted into a shop. The Armoury Tavern on Stapleton Road was partially built in the middle of the 19th century, but has been left empty since 2017. The pub would be renovated, with the majority of the changes made inside the building.

In planning documents, developers said their plan was a “fantastic opportunity to rejuvenate a long-vacant structure”, and would “contribute to the vitality” of the neighbourhood.

Garages removed in council tower block ahead of renovation

Garages at a council tower block could be removed ahead of a major renovation. A total of 17 unused garages at Francombe, Waring and Underdown Houses in Redcliffe would be cleared away. The site would instead be used by contractors as compound areas, while they renovate the buildings.

The renovation includes external wall insulation, replacing doors and windows, and a new roof covering for Waring House. The garages are in a courtyard in between the three buildings, which were built in 1960.

The complex was part of a wider redevelopment of Redcliffe, as part of Bristol’s reconstruction efforts after the Second World War, to replace homes that were bombed. After the renovation, the space will become car parking for residents.

Last pub on housing estate could become shops

Developers have submitted plans to convert an old pub in Lawrence Weston into shops. The Giant Goram is the last remaining pub in the housing estate, and has been shut for several years. Last year, developers failed to get planning permission to build houses on the site. Now, a new application has been submitted to convert the pub into shops.

The Giant Goram opened on Barrowmead Drive in the 1950s and was a pillar of the community until it closed in 2019. Previous plans included eight houses and a micropub there, with space for just a few revellers drinking at a time. Campaigners have been trying to buy the building and reopen the pub.
