Ramsey Abbey House

The estate is situated on some seven acres in the heart of Ramsey, a market town in Cambridgeshire in the east of England and East Anglia, with Ramsey Abbey House — which is set among the grounds of the great Benedictine Abbey of Ramsey that dates to circa 985.

The Abbey is believed to have flourished for more than five centuries until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 and then passed to Sir Richard Cromwell (also known as Sir Richard Williams). A great-grandfather of Oliver Cromwell, Sir Richard, who was a maternal nephew of Thomas Cromwell, profited from the dissolution of the monasteries in which his uncle played an active role.

By the 18th century Coulson Fellowes, a MP for Huntingdonshire, bought the house. It passed down through several generations of the family until the 20th century when it was gifted to the National Trust in 1952. It’s currently owned by James O’Reilly, who is originally from Co Limerick.
