A doctor has listed a number of symptoms which he says people should not ignore as they grow older. Dr Mark Hyman, in conjunction with Function Health, listed symptoms such as fatigue, muscle loss, weight gain, hair loss, low libido, and anxiety as things which people often dismiss – but they should not.

He warned that they could be symptoms of problems with your hormones. Dr Hyman said that 80 per cent of women experience hormone imbalances, and nearly 40 per cent of men over 45 have low testosterone.

However, he said that all too often symptoms were swept under the carpet due to our busy lives, or people simply becoming older and putting it down to ageing.

An Instagram post read: “Are your hormones in need of attention? 80% of women experience hormone imbalances, and nearly 40% of men over 45 have low testosterone. Yet, symptoms get brushed off as side effects of a busy life or a natural part of aging.

If your body is sending signals, don’t ignore them. Don’t settle for thinking these symptoms are your new normal. Get answers. Check your hormones.”

After listing fatigue, muscle loss, weight gain, hair loss, low libido, and anxiety, he said that while these were ‘common’ symptoms, they were not ‘normal’.

He added that up to 35 per cent of women have irregular cycles, which is a symptom of hormonal disruption, while 80 per cent experience symptoms of hormone imbalance – most of which occurs during menopause.

As for men, he said 24 per cent of those aged 20-59 struggle with both low testosterone and metabolic syndrome. He added that nearly 40 per of men over 45 have low testosterone.

“If something feels off, your hormones could be playing a role. Get answers, ” he added.
