• Morgan’s just revealed its newest model, the 2025 Supersport, intended to rival Porsche
  • It has a similar engine to the old Plus Six, and, yes, there’s still plenty of wood in its chassis
  • The MSRP hovers around CDN$190,000, but the Supersport won’t be coming to North America

The U.K.-based brand of Morgan, known for its retro flair and appreciation for all things historic, has done something it rarely does and introduced a new car. Called the Supersport, it may look just like the machines it has been hammering out for the past six-and-a-half decades, but it’s sufficiently fresh that Morgan has chosen to homologate it as an entirely new car.

Under the bonnet is a 3.0L turbocharged straight-six engine cribbed from BMW, tuned here to produce 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That power is funnelled to the rear wheels through a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration time from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) is said to take just under four seconds. In these details, it is pretty similar to the Plus Six; however the chassis on which this machine is built is said to have gone through thousands of changes in a pursuit of better handing and rigidity.

And, yes, there is still wood in this structure; in fact, enough of it is present supporting the rear end that the material is allegedly on display when one peers into the trunk. No one can ever accuse Morgan of abandoning its roots, both literally and figuratively.

Suspension geometry is new compared to the Plus Six, even if the Supersport shares a wheelbase with the old car. Track measures are wider, wheel travel is massively increased for better ride comfort, and a new steering rack should produce quicker responses. Curb weight is listed at a feather-like 1,170 kilograms (2,579 lbs). Overall length is 4,110 millimetres (161.8 inches) with a total height of just 1,290 mm (50.8 inches). For comparison, a contemporary Mazda MX-5 weighs under 1,100 kilos and is under four metres long.

Ironically, our first attempt at accessing the Supersport online configurator was thwarted because their site didn’t support a Safari browser on Mac. In keeping with the Morgan spirit, we then tried parchment scrolls and charcoal, only to find Chrome worked just fine. Befitting the bespoke tendencies of this brand, umpteen colour choices are available. Morgan says an ability to change between a carbon-composite hard top and folding mohair soft top gives the Supersport multiple personas and enables year-round enjoyment.

The base car starts at just over 100,000 pounds (approximately CDN$190,000 as of this writing) though there is no shortage of options and accessories to push the final total well north of that figure. And to get to the question we’re sure is on our readers’ minds, yes, while we quote a Canadian-dollar equivalent MSRP, no, you won’t be able to order a Supersport in North America. So who is this new Morgan aimed at exactly? The firm sees the Supersport as a Euro-market rival to the likes of a Porsche 911, which explains why the price tracks in terms of the competitive ballpark.
