A young girl has died after being found unresponsive in the bath, an inquest has heard. Emergency services rushed to the home of Cali Marged Lewis-Mclernon, four, last month, after she was found unresponsive.

She was taken to Glangwili Hospital, but died in the early hours of the following morning. An inquest into the four-year-old’s death was opened by Paul Bennett, the senior coroner for Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, at Llanelli Town Hall, Monday, March 10.

Hayley Rogers, Coroner’s Officer for Dyfed-Powys Police, told the hearing police first received a call at 5:59pm on February 20 from the Welsh Ambulance Service, WalesOnline reported. Assistance had been requested due to Cali being found in cardiac arrest and “unresponsive in the bath” in the address in the Llangunnor area of Carmarthen, Wales.

Miss Rogers also confirmed Cali died at Glangwili Hospital at 2:45am the following morning. A week later, a post mortem was carried out at the hospital. The results are yet to be confirmed.

Police have launched an ongoing investigation, and a 41-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. She has since been released on bail.

Mr Bennett offered his condolences to Cali’s family and adjourned the inquest until a further hearing on June 30.

Following the death, a spokeswoman for Dyed-Powys Police said: “We received a request for assistance from the ambulance service at an address in Llangunnor, Carmarthen, at around 6pm on Thursday, February 20. A child was unwell at the property, and was taken to hospital, where she sadly died a short time later. One person has been arrested and enquiries are ongoing.”
