Travellers are being warned that they could risk ruining their holiday if they follow one bizarre trend that many are doing on TikTok. Flight experts have noted that the latest viral sensation, the “Airport Theory”, has exploded on the platform, amassing more than 382.9 million posts.

But what exactly is it? This trend questions the traditional practice of arriving early for a flight and instead proposes the idea that just 15 minutes is sufficient to get through security.

One video alone gained more than 12 million views, with many wondering why she chose to do it. Comments flooded in, with one writing: “I’d rather sit in an airport for two hours than risk missing my flight” with another adding: “I don’t understand how people miss flights.

“That’s hundreds of dollars gone because you cannot wait at your gate. I’d wait 1-2 hours minimum at my gate because I’m so scared to miss my flight.”

With many people now looking to book breaks ahead of Easter and summer, experts have warned people heading on a plane to avoid doing this at all costs.

Amanda Parker at Netflights warned holidaymakers: “While some participants may have found success with the [Airport] theory, the trend largely depends on variable factors like queue times and the distance to your gate, which can differ depending on the airport and the time of your flight. Additionally, boarding typically begins 45 minutes before departure, which is half an hour earlier than the 15 minutes suggested in ‘Airport Theory,’ further emphasising the risks of following this trend.

“To ensure you have enough time to comfortably catch your flight and avoid missing out on your holiday, we recommend that UK travellers check in at least three hours before departure for long haul flights, two hours for European flights, and 1 hour for domestic flights. With all this in mind, we strongly advise against participating in this trend.”

They also recommend that you plan for peak times to ensure you get there on time. And if you can, pre-book fast-track boarding.

They say this can come in handy as it can result in reduced time spent in queues and smoother airport experience – ideal for large groups or people with kids. However, for passengers testing out Airport Theory, fast-track boarding still does not guarantee to be able to get through security and arrive at your boarding gate on time.

In their final piece of advice, they advise people avoid waiting in the airport and instead check their flight updates and live travel news regularly. This can prevent waiting around in the airport when flights are potentially delayed. However, it’s still recommended that travellers arrive at the airport as usual, in case of any changes.

Bristol Airport

On the airport’s Security Guidelines at Bristol Airport page, the restrictions and rules are explained. In the FAQ section, it asks what people should do if their flight has been delayed.

It cautions: “Security Central Search closes after the final scheduled departure each day. If your evening flight is delayed, please still arrive at least 2 hours before the original scheduled time.”

It continues: “We’re committed to processing passengers as quickly as possible. Please give yourself additional time for security processing, particularly during peak times and remember to check your hand luggage beforehand.”

When it comes to “what to expect” when you arrive, it further advises: “All passengers flying out of Bristol Airport are subject to the same security procedures and regulations. We therefore recommend that you allow enough time for the usual security and x-ray screening.”
