A dozen people have been injured after three gunmen opened fire at a Toronto pub.

The incident occurred at around 10.30pm on Friday near Scarborough city centre in eastern Toronto.

Three men entered the bar and “opened fire indiscriminately,” Toronto Police has said. The men were armed with an assault rifle and handguns.

Glass walls were shattered and there were reports of “blood all over the floor,” including in the basement where people ran to hide.

Six people reportedly suffered gunshot wounds and others were hurt by broken glass. The victims ages range from 20s to mid-50s.

However, authorities have said the injuries are not life threatening.

Police Supt Paul MacIntyre said the motive for the attack remains unknown, and police were following all leads.

“This was a brazen and reckless act of violence that’s really shaken our community and the city itself,” he added.

“These guys just looked at the crowd and opened fire. It was horrible,” he said.

Mayor Olivia Chow said she was “deeply troubled to hear reports of a shooting at a pub in Scarborough.”

“This is an early and ongoing investigation – police will provide further details. My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” she added.

The number of those injured in the attack is higher than other shootings in the area in 2024.

Forty-three people in Toronto were killed last year in shootings, with two killed and eight injured in the police division where yesterday’s incident happened.

However, Canada’s rate of firearm homicides is much lower than neighbour USA, with 0.6 per 100,000 people compared to 4.5 per 100,000, according to 2021 data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
