Tesco shoppers are left fuming as the supermarket giant has discontinued a much-used feature from today. The ‘Pay In-Store’ function, formerly known as Tesco Pay+, will no longer be available on the Tesco app at checkouts, much to the disappointment of customers who appreciated the ease of paying and accumulating Clubcard points simultaneously.
As of today, March 7, this popular feature has been officially removed as part of a broader evaluation of Tesco’s app capabilities, causing widespread customer dissatisfaction. An email dispatched to customers confirmed that this change would take effect today, cautioning that the feature will cease to function, and any stored card details will be deleted unless used for GetGo, Whoosh, or home delivery.
The email stated: “To ensure we’re able to keep bringing out the best value and convenience, we’ve taken the decision to remove the pay in-store feature from the Tesco app.”
Customers will now have to pay separately after scanning their Clubcard at the checkout, putting an end to the previous, more straightforward procedure. Although Clubcard Prices and points can still be obtained by scanning the Clubcard or adding it to Apple or Google Wallet, many shoppers are disgruntled about the loss of the once-simple process.
One Tesco shopper expressed their frustration: “Tesco app ….I press “pay in store”for my shopping and I’m told ” we no longer accept payment from the app”? Having just paid for my fuel at your filling station. Can you explain why ? What’s going on? It was so simple before.”
Jessica added: “Such a shame that @Tesco have removed the pay in store feature fro M&S Food is slashing the prices of over 200 items as part of its commitment to deliver trusted value for its 30 million customers. Donna voiced her frustration on Twitter: “@Tesco first you stop Pay plus (lovely easy app) next you stop without warning the pay in store QR code on your app yet I still need it to scan my Clubcard then I need to Apple Pay my purchase with my Tesco card ..just making things harder not simpler !”
Peter chimed in, saying: “@Tesco removing the pay in store feature from the app sucks. Just one swipe obviously better than two, why do this to your users?
One disgruntled shopper shared their disappointment on social media, stating: “I was so gutted when I saw this email, meant I didn’t have to carry my physical card and was so handy.
Another added: “I been using this since the first week it came out years ago, unhappy with this. it was so much easier”.
A Tesco spokesperson responded: “We regularly review the payment options available to customers. It’s still quick and easy to earn points and enjoy Clubcard Prices by scanning your Clubcard or adding it to Apple or Google Wallet. “
In a positive turn for Clubcard holders, millions of Tesco shoppers can now earn up to £50 in extra points through the revamped rewards game. Additionally, Clubcard members can now get double the value of points at PizzaExpress. Until the end of April, a £1.50 voucher will save you £3 on food and drinks, as part of Tesco’s 30-year Clubcard anniversary celebration.
And for those who may have lost track of their Clubcard points, Tesco is urging customers to check for any unused points, as some shoppers could be owed hundreds of pounds.
