Thanks to promises of cheap holidays and beautiful beaches, 6.3 million British tourists visited the Canaries in 2024 – an increase of over half a million compared to 2023. But holidaymakers making the most of the sand could face a £1,600 charge if they’re not careful.

Vapes experts atWickdUp, have warned of the serious issues that face one of the 4.6 million Brits that vape or 6 million smokers, who may be unaware that Spain classes beaches are part of their public spaces, which means vaping is illegal on many beaches.

In the UK, when it comes to vaping and outdoor events, it is not illegal to vape in public, and although each individual business or venue owner has the right to decide whether vaping is allowed, generally, it is allowed at open-air events. Whilst Spain is generally considered to be quite relaxed when it comes to sales and regulations, one of the newer regulations which has been introduced in Spain surrounds smoking and vaping on beaches.

Smoking is not permitted on many beaches in Spain, most recently, 28 beaches on the Baleraic Islands as well as 10 beaches in Barcelona and others across the country have said vaping is prohibited.

Mike Byers, director of WickdUp said: “Whilst it may be tempting to sneakily use your vape whilst relaxing on the beach, it is important to abide by local regulations and laws. Smoking is generally permitted in private, open-air terraces of bars and restaurants, provided that the area is not enclosed or covered by more than two walls and a roof.

“So if you’re craving your vape, take it as an opportunity to enjoy some time at a local bar or restaurant and get an all important rest from the direct sun. If in doubt, use Gov.uk to seek advice whenever unsure and stay up to date with laws and regulations in every country.

“Many EU countries allow vaping in public spaces, so consider these countries when planning your summer get away.”
