- Volkswagen just unveiled the ID.Every1, a budget-friendly EV designed for European markets
- The concept car features a 94-hp motor, 250-km battery range, and over-the-air software updates
- The ID.Every1 previews a sub-$35,000 production EV due 2027—though it likely won’t come to Canada
Volkswagen took the covers off of its ID.Every1 concept car early March, previewing the affordable entry-level electric vehicle (EV) it says is set for production in 2027. With a target price of around €20,000 (or about CDN$31,000) the model is part of Volkswagen’s Electric Urban Car Family, and is built on the brand’s front-wheel-drive modular electric drive (MEB) platform.
As the images clearly show, the ID.Every1 is, well, not big. It measures 3,880 mm (152.7 inches) in length, slotting between the discontinued Up! and the current Polo. It can seat four passengers; and has a luggage capacity of 305 litres.
Powered by a newly developed 70-kW (94-hp) electric motor, the vehicle has a top speed of 130 km/h (80 mph) and an estimated minimum battery range of 250 km (155 miles). Volkswagen’s updated software architecture will allow the production version to receive over-the-air updates throughout its life cycle.
The ID.Every1 is part of Volkswagen’s plan to offer budget-friendly electric mobility. It follows on the heels of the ID.2all, another affordable EV priced below €25,000, which is scheduled for release in 2026. Volkswagen plans to expand its electric lineup with four front-wheel-drive MEB-based models by 2027.
Volkswagen’s long-term strategy involves a three-phase plan. The first phase focuses on strengthening the company’s competitive position. By 2027, nine new models, including the ID.2all and the production version of the ID.Every1, will be launched. Volkswagen has also emphasized affordability and accessibility in its EV strategy. CEO Thomas Schäfer highlighted the company’s goal of offering a wide range of vehicles for different customers.
The ID.Every1 is expected to play a key role in expanding Volkswagen’s EV lineup in the European market. As to whether it will be made available for purchase in North America, well, the odds are not in its favour. We guess it’s not quite for Every1 after all.
