A cleaning expert has revealed a straightforward and effective tip for food preparation that they wish they had known earlier. Given the array of utensils found in most kitchens, ensuring their cleanliness is crucial.

Chopping boards are a common feature during meal prep, but certain materials could be hiding harmful germs. It’s worth noting that chopping boards made from different materials require specific cleaning methods, whether they’re plastic, glass, steel, or marble.

However, wooden chopping boards can harbour bacteria, necessitating thorough disinfection after use. Chopping boards also play a role in preventing cross-contamination between foods, with professional kitchens often using colour-coded boards for different food items.

To tackle any lurking germs, TikToker Christy shared a simple method to disinfect your chopping boards using just two natural ingredients likely already in your kitchen: coarse salt and a lemon.

In a recent video, Christy showed how easy it can be to disinfect. First, liberally sprinkle or grind the salt all over the chopping board, reports the Express.

Then, cut a lemon in half and use it to scrub the salt into the wood’s grain, gently squeezing the lemon to release some juice. Eventually, the salt will break down into a coarse paste, ensuring that any bacteria lurking in scratches are eliminated.

The lemon also serves to freshen up the chopping board.

After letting it sit for a few minutes, rinse off any remaining residue with hot water, taking care to remove all lemon pulp. It’s crucial to thoroughly dry the board or surface afterwards and allow it to air dry completely.
