Meghan Markle’s co-star Chef Roy Choi explained to the Duchess of Sussex the “racist” stigma surrounding the cooking ingredient monosodium glutamate (MSG) during his appearance in her Netflix series.

During one scene, Chef Choi passes the Duchess of Sussex the ingredient MSG to include in the meal and Meghan raises that people used to ask for it not to be included in their meals.

Meghan said: “A little bit of MSG? I don’t know enough about it.

“I just remember when there came a time in the 90s or early 2000s when you were ordering food (people would say) ‘no MSG’.

“I don’t quite know why that happened.”

Chef Choi replied: “Do you want to know the real reason? It was racist.

“It was racist against Asians. It was a thing about Chinese restaurants.”

He added: “What we have now is this more democratic food culture where information can be accessed.

“You don’t see any young people saying MSG gets you sick anymore.”

Meghan replied: “Very true, I am glad we have evolved in that way.”

MSG is also known as sodium glutamate and is a sodium salt of glutamic acid.

It can be found naturally in foods including tomatoes and cheese in its glutamic acid form.

The Duchess of Sussex and her guest were able to continue filming as Martin kept the green plaster on his hand for the remainder of the episode.
