From time to time people try and lose weight.

After all, most people want to be healthy, fit and in good shape. But, achieving weight loss can prove challenging for many.

Fortunately, Dr Amir Khan has recently offered valuable health tips that could turn things around. The esteemed ITV doctor suggests five straightforward strategies to boost metabolism and aid weight loss.

Dr Amir discussed this subject on Lorraine and later shared the segment on his social media. He explained that our metabolism is influenced “by things we do everyday and that’s normal”.

In a post accompanying the video, he elaborated: “It’s the process by which we extract energy from food and how we build things in our body too.”

While appearing on Lorraine, Dr Amir said: “Lots of people think their metabolism is fixed, but there are things we can all do every day to speed it up, and that will help you burn more calories as the day goes on.

“So, the first thing is build more muscle. So that’s strength training. Muscle helps you burn calories as you rest. So, if you’ve been to the gym, you’ve lifted weights, you’re still burning calories when you get home – really good.

“Number two, build protein into your diet. We need protein in our diet so things like fish, chicken, yoghurt, tofu – all of that will get protein in, feed that muscle, get it better and increase your resting metabolic rate.”

He emphasised the importance of a good night’s sleep, explaining that it can help regulate hunger cravings and boost metabolism. Staying active is also crucial, as exercise burns calories, and even a simple walk can make a difference.

Additionally, the doctor highlighted the benefits of drinking smartly, noting that being well-hydrated can increase calorie burn, making drinks an important factor in metabolism.

The video sharing these tips has garnered over 2,000 views and prompted positive reactions from viewers. One viewer commented: “Thank you. Great advice and sensible advice.”

Another shared their own experience, writing: “Great tips. I strength train three times a week and try to have high protein foods. It definitely speeds up metabolism but I struggle to keep hydrated – something I’m working on.”

When it comes to weight loss, the NHS suggests various methods, from minor dietary and drink adjustments to seeking more support from healthcare providers or groups. Losing weight when overweight can lead to increased energy and reduced risks of obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

However, finding a weight loss routine that suits an individual’s needs is key. Before making any major changes to your diet, it’s always recommended to consult a medical professional.

The NHS website is a trustworthy source of information for guidance on healthy weight loss. Our bodies require energy from calories to function correctly.

To maintain your weight, the amount of calories you consume should equal the amount your body uses. On average, men need around 2,500 calories per day, while women require approximately 2,000 calories per day.
