A man has died following a serious assault in Co Tyrone.

The incident happened in a block of flats close to Corrainey Park in Dungannon shortly after 8pm.

Specialist firearms officers carried out a major search operation at the block a short time later.

Officers with pistols drawn ordered a man out of a flat in the property before searching a roof space.

Earlier in the night, pictures showed a heavy police presence in the Lisnahull area of Dungannon.

A large area has been sealed off by police as an investigation begins.

Detective Chief Inspector Phillips said: “Shortly after 8pm, it was reported that a man was found with serious injuries at a flat in the area. Police attended, but sadly the man passed away as a result of his injuries.”

SDLP Mid Ulster councillor Malachy Quinn posted on social media: “Sad news coming out of Dungannon tonight.

“I would urge people to avoid the area tonight.”

One local said there was shock at what had happened.

“We realised something was wrong when we heard the sirens – there was a lot of emergency services on the scene very quickly,” they said.

Sinn Fein councillor Deirdre Varsani said people were “understandably concerned” at the incident, which began shortly after 8pm.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 8.13pm following reports of an incident in the Corrainey Park area.

“NIAS despatched one Rapid Response Paramedic, two emergency crews and an advanced paramedic to the incident.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, no patients were taken to hospital.”

Ms Varsani, posting on social media, said there was “an ongoing serious incident at the flats at the entrance to Lisnahull”.

“Emergency crews and multiple police cars are in attendance and a large area is cordoned off; no access or exit is currently possible via the Newell Road entrance to Lisnahull and this is likely to continue while teams carry out their duties,” she said.

“People in the area are understandably concerned and more details will be updated; but at present emergency teams from across the full range of services thank local people for their patience and cooperation.”

Corrainey Park is in the Lisnahull area, a large estate off the Newell Road in Dungannon.

Local independent councillor Barry Monteith said: “There is definitely a major incident going on and traffic is being diverted.”

SDLP councillor Karol McQuade said: “I am aware of an incident in Lisnahull, Dungannon, where emergency services are currently attending.

“Please let emergency services do their job and stay clear of the area and avoid circulating video footage.”
