A man has been arrested after an officer was assaulted following an attempted vehicle stop in Londonderry

Police attempted to stop the vehicle after they observed it driving erratically in the Creggan area of the city earlier today.

A passenger subsequently fled on foot and kicked a police officer’s head in the process.

The 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault on police as well as obstructing and resisting police.

The man was further arrested in relation to the seizure of suspected Class A controlled drugs in July of last year with an estimated street value of £100,000.

Inspector Pearce said: “While on patrol, officers attempted to stop a vehicle which was being driven erratically, however, a passenger fled on foot, kicking a police officer in the head. Thankfully, there were no reports of serious injuries.

“The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault on police, obstructing police and resisting police.

“He was further arrested in relation to the seizure of suspected Class A controlled drugs with an estimated potential street value of £100,000 on July 10, 2024.

“He remains in police custody at this time.”
