Spring is just around the corner, and what better way to welcome the new season than by revamping your cleaning routine at home?

If you’re finding that something isn’t quite working for you, now’s the ideal time to switch things up for a more effective approach. A frequent issue encountered in households is dry, scratchy towels, often resulting from too much detergent or fabric softener.

But fear not, even without a tumble dryer at hand, you can still keep your towels feeling as soft and fluffy as when they were new, simply by tweaking how you store them.

This top tip comes from Molly Freshwater, the founder of Secret Linen Store, who has revealed the secret to avoiding those unpleasantly hard towels that nobody likes to use after a shower, reports the Express.

For those with limited storage space or where towels are tightly packed into a cupboard or on a shelf, it might be time to think about an alternative storage method.

The linen expert points out that folding towels too snugly or piling them up heavily can crush their fibres, leading to a loss of softness over time.

To ensure your towels remain soft and absorbent, it’s best to store them in a loose manner, allowing air to flow around them. This not only keeps them fluffy but also extends their freshness.

Additionally, cramming towels into the washing machine is another no-no if you want to preserve their texture.

The expert said: “It might feel easier to just toss all the family’s bath towels into the wash at once, but this won’t actually help with softness or cleanliness.

“When there are too many towels in the machine, the detergent and fabric conditioner can’t rinse out properly. For the best results, try washing your towels in smaller loads.

“This way, the detergent gets a chance to properly rinse out, leaving your towels feeling soft, fluffy, and ready to use after every wash.”

The experts recommend drying your towels on a low heat setting so they’re not completely dried out, or hanging them outside on a windy day.

For those with the luxury of a tumble-dryer, add an old tennis ball or a ‘dryer ball’ and watch as your towels become fluffier than usual.
