Dr Amir Khan, a familiar face on television, recently made an appearance on the ITV programme Lorraine to discuss how our metabolism operates and is influenced by everyday activities. Metabolism is the body’s way of breaking down what we eat and drink into energy, which is crucial for those trying to shed some pounds.
Beyond weight loss, metabolism plays a key role in repairing and constructing our bodies, ensuring everything works smoothly – this includes processes we rarely consider like breathing, circulating blood, and even thinking. However, various factors can alter metabolic rates.
Dr Amir highlighted five tips to boost or increase metabolic speed. He commented: “Lots of people think their metabolism is fixed but there are things that we can all do everyday to speed it up, and that will help you burn more calories as the day goes on.”
How to boost your metabolism
Build more muscle
Tips to enhance metabolism include building muscle, with Dr Amir noting, “So if you’ve been to the gym lifting weights, you’re still burning calories when you get home, really good.”
More protein
Additionally, he emphasised the importance of protein in our diet for muscle growth, immune support, and fluid balance, citing sources such as fish, chicken, yogurts, and tofu.

Sleep
Then he touched upon the significance of sleep, reports Surrey Live. Dr Amir Khan has shared some top tips for boosting your metabolism, and it turns out rest is more beneficial than you might think.
He explained that a good night’s sleep can “protect” against the surge of hunger hormones, curbing those pesky food cravings.
Do more activity
But it’s not just about getting enough shut-eye. Dr Amir recommends increasing your daily activity in simple ways.
He said: “I use this acronym, NEAT, which is non-exercise activity training. So it’s not exercise or eating or anything like that. It’s the things you do in between, like walking, taking the stairs, just even flailing around with your arms like I do all the time. It burns calories.”
Drink smart
And when it comes to staying hydrated, it’s crucial for more than just quenching thirst. Proper hydration can help you burn more calories and be “more efficient” at burning fat.
Plus, he points out that drinks like green tea and black coffee may give your metabolism a temporary boost.
