A man has been charged in connection to a string of offences in the west Belfast area.

The 23-year-old was arrested on February 25 after it was reported to police that staff had been threatened by a man with bolt cutters at a supermarket in Dunmurry before making off without paying.

Reports were received a short time later describing a man armed with knives approaching members of the public in the Teeling Avenue area.

A man was apprehended by police and arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including common assault, assault on police, theft and possession of an offensive weapon in public.

He has now been charged with a number of offences, including two counts of assault on police and possession of a Class A controlled drug.

Further charges include resisting police, common assault, two counts of theft and possessing an offensive weapon and an article with a blade or point in a public place.

The man is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on February 27.

A spokesman from the PSNI said: “A man has been charged to court in connection with a report he was armed with knives, and other related offences in the Dunmurry area on Tuesday, 25th February.

“The 23-year-old has been charged with possessing an article with a blade or point in a public place, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, two counts of theft, criminal damage and threatening or abusive behaviour.

“He has also been further charged with two counts of assault on police, resisting police, common assault and possession of a Class A controlled drug.

“The man is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 27th February. As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”
