Anyone with a blocked toilet can unclog it using a common household item that will cost you pennies – rather than hundreds of pounds in a plumber’s call-out fee. Plumbing parts expert Ryan McNicholl of Spares Direct said you can fix a clogged toilet using clingfilm.
There are many solutions to clearing a blocked toilet, but Ryan warns some can cause serious, lasting damage that can result in up to £1,500 in repairs. “Bleach and other chemical cleaners can wear down your pipes over time and cause leaks. DIY fixes – like using a wire coat hanger – might seem like a quick solution, but they can scratch or even gouge the ceramic, leading to expensive repairs.”
Cling film may not be the first thing that comes to mind for unblocking a toilet, but it’s a cheap and accessible option. Most homes have some already on hand, and if not, a 40-meter roll costs just £1 at Poundland – far more affordable than your traditional £5 chemical cleaners.
“All you need is a roll of clingfilm and you’re ready to go,” Ryan advises. “Ensure your toilet bowl is clean and dry before you begin. Cover it with two to three layers of cling film, making sure it’s airtight. Once you’re confident it’s secure and won’t move, flush the toilet. As the cling film inflates, press down firmly – this will force air back into the toilet, working like a makeshift plunger to clear the blockage.”
Ryan also emphasises the importance of proper toilet maintenance. “If you’re dealing with frequent blockages, it could be a sign that something more serious is going on. Regularly check your pipes and consider using eco-friendly cleaning solutions to avoid potential damage.”
This simple hack offers a practical solution that anyone can try before calling in a professional. So, the next time you’re faced with a stubborn blockage, don’t reach for harsh chemicals – try a roll of cling film instead, and save yourself time, money, and stress.
What not to flush down your toilet:
-
Fish: Flushing a pet goldfish can clog your drains. Instead, bury it or dispose of it in the bin.
-
Wet Wipes: Most wet wipes aren’t flushable and can cause serious pipe blockages. Always throw them in the bin.
-
Hair: Hair doesn’t dissolve and easily wraps around pipes, leading to blockages. Dispose of it in the bin instead.
-
Cat Litter: When wet, cat litter expands into a thick, cement-like texture that can quickly clog drains. Always bin it.
