With spring finally upon us, it’s time for a deep clean, and from tidying kitchens to refreshing bathrooms, no part of the house should be spared. One critical spot not to overlook is where you sleep as a clean mattress offer increased hygiene and better quality sleep.

Andrew Seed, a bedding expert from The Odd Company has sounded an alarm on a popular mattress cleaning method that’s sweeping the internet, warning that it might make health issues like asthma even worse.

“We’ve seen that more and more people are searching for tips on steam cleaning their mattresses. However, what many don’t realise is that this isn’t only ineffective, it can often do more harm than good,” Andrew cautions.

He warns against the use of steam in cleaning mattresses because of its tendency to moisten and potentially foster mould growth, saying it could also pose health risks and worsen allergies.

The expert said: “Steam introduces moisture deep into the mattress, which creates an ideal environment for mould to grow. Mould spores in the air can trigger asthma symptoms, including wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath,” reports Surrey Live.

His advice sheds light on the importance of proper mattress maintenance and the risks associated with certain trendy cleaning methods.

While heat can exterminate dust mites, the residual moisture can create a perfect breeding environment for them if the mattress doesn’t fully dry. Dust mite droppings are another common asthma trigger.
