A cleaning expert has revealed common home hygiene errors, with a major mishap involving the washing machine being among them. Going by @christyytiktok on TikTok, Christy disclosed her secret to maintaining a sparkling clean appliance without using harsh chemicals.

In an early-April video, she demonstrated a straightforward trick for keeping your washing machine pristine and ensuring laundry comes out smelling fresh: just add white vinegar. For those experiencing unpleasant odours or find their washing machine isn’t working properly, Christy recommends running an empty hot wash with vinegar once every month, reports the Express.

She clarified in the clip: “Run an empty hot wash with vinegar once a month for your washing machine to work properly (and your clothes smell fresh).”

According to The Spruce, due to its acetic acid content, distilled white vinegar and cleaning vinegar are excellent for deeply cleaning your washing machine. This acetic acid is potent in dissolving various mineral accumulations within the washer’s drums and piping.

Moreover, it combats bacteria and fungi, which are commonly behind nasty scents. Vinegar acts as an organic deodoriser too.

Furthermore, vinegar stands out as a natural disinfectant, exceptionally good at eradicating stubborn dirt, leftover detergent, and mildew from the drum and seals thanks to its acidic nature. As a result, it sanitises and breaks down mineral deposits inside your appliance.

However, caution is advised not to overdo it; an excess of vinegar might harm the machine’s rubber seal. Christy’s video gained a huge following with over 81,400 views, 4,964 likes and 89 comments.

Sunset asked: “How much vinegar would you recommend in the washing machine?”
