Energy experts say a quick fridge trick could save you hundreds of pounds a year. The pros at Electric-Solar said doing it just twice a year could add an extra 30% to your annual energy savings.

As Brits continue to battle the cost of living crisis, small yet effective household hacks are becoming essential in the quest to cut down on rising energy bills – and this one simple trick could save you up to £534 off your bills, they claimed. Cleaning the coils on the back of your fridge is a quick, two-minute task most people leave unnoticed.

Matthew Alford, energy expert and owner of Electric-Solar, said: “Fridge coils are what keeps the air inside cool and your food fresh. They get surprisingly dirty, which makes them work less efficiently, forcing your fridge to work harder and, therefore, costing you more money on your energy bills.

“Being hidden around the back often means they’re easily forgotten. It’s a quick and easy task – just grab your vacuum and a cloth and in two minutes you can start saving on your monthly energy bill.”

How to clean your refrigerator coils

Turn off and unplug your refrigerator.

Find the coils: These are usually located on either the back or the underneath of your fridge. You may need to remove a panel or grille to access them.

Gently clean: hoover up any dirt and dust from the coils. Remove any remaining debris with a cloth, being careful not to damage them.

Reassemble and plug back in.
