A doctor has shared a stark warning with anyone who drinks tea, as they may be exposing themselves to harmful substances without realising it. Dr Mark Hyman, a globally-known medical expert and educator, regularly shares updates with his millions of social media followers.
And in a recent update, the doctor explained that a “recent study found that teabags release approximately 11.6 billion microplastic in a single cup of tea”. He added that “plastics in your tea aren’t just an environmental issues, they could also be affecting your health”.
The post continued: “Your cup of tea should nourish you, not expose you to plastic pollution. The cumulative effects of daily exposure to microplastics is still unfolding, but why take the risk?” Instead, Dr Hyman is urging tea drinkers to “use an organic loose leaf tea and steep it” with a stainless steel or glass strainer.
He added: “If you like using tea bags for their convenience or portability, make sure you’re getting the kind that’s free from bisphenol-A (BPA), phthalates, polypropylene, and epichlorohydrin.
“Look for tea bags made from organic hemp, cotton, or plant fibres instead. Tea can be an incredible source of antioxidants in your life, but just like food—quality matters.”
